Gertrude Stein Political Club endorses multiple candidates for President of the United States

Pittsburgh, PA (March 12, 2004)-- The Gertrude Stein Political Club of Greater Pittsburgh (GSPCGP) announced today that it has broadened its endorsement of Howard Dean to include John Kerry and Dennis Kucinich for President in the Democratic Primary.  Since Kerry already has enough delegates to get the nomination, votes for Dennis Kucinich or Howard Dean are the way to send progressive delegates to the Democratic Convention. These delegates will participate in the development of the Democratic Party platform, so it is still important to vote in the primary.  Under the current rules, a presidential candidate has to get at least 15% of the vote in a Congressional district to get any delegates from that district.  Delegates committed to that candidate will be chosen on the basis of their individual vote totals.    Endorsements for delegates to the Democratic Convention pledged to Dennis Kucinich were given to Michael G. Plaskon and Craig Stevens from the 14th District and Lorraine M. Whalen from 4th District.   Other endorsements were given for Representative in the Pennsylvania General Assembly to Joseph Preston, Jr. (Dem) District 24 and Jake Wheatley, Jr. (Dem) for District 19.

The Stein Club based its endorsements on candidates’ track records and their responses to the Club’s questionnaire. The Club did not make endorsements for state or local offices for which it did not receive questionnaires from viable candidates.
