GSPCGP Celebrated at PrideFest (June 2003)
-Pro-Gay, Pro-Choice, Anti-Racist-
Those were the words on the t-shirts that members of the Gertrude Stein Political Club of Greater Pittsburgh proudly wore in the PrideFest parade in Pittsburgh on June 21.
The members carried their State-Convention-like banner through Shadyside, then set up the banner at booth 29. Here, they drew the attention of many festi-goers to lobby Harrisburg for civil rights legislation. As a member organization of SPARC, GSPCGP was given hundreds of postcards asking regional senators and representatives to pass legislation in Pennsylvania to protect the civil rights of the lgbt community. Stein Club members received a lot of signatures on these postcards during the festival.
Last year, GSPCGP was instrumental in gathering signed postcards in favor of Hate Crime legislation, which passed at the end of the year. The Club expects to push hard in the next few years to do the same for state-wide civil rights.
The Stein Club passed out literature and announced its Web site: It let festi-goers know where to find the Club's endorsement slate for pro-gay, pro-choice, anti-racist candidates.
