GSPCGP Letter to Hon. Rick Santorum (May 20, 2003)

The Hon. Rick Santorum

U.S. Senate

Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Sir,

We of the Gertrude Stein Political Club of Greater Pittsburgh work for the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people.  Our own membership consists of members of this community as well as heterosexuals, but we are united in our purpose.  We oppose discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.  This should be treated the same as discrimination on the basis of race, sex, and other attributes that are protected under current civil rights law.

Sodomy laws that prohibit private and consensual gay and lesbian sexual activity are currently discriminatory.  We are disturbed by your recent remarks equating such activity with things such as incest and polygamy.  The remarks were insensitive and inappropriate.  We believe that an apology is in order.  If you do not apologize, we believe that you should resign your position as Chair of the Senate Republican Caucus.

Sincerely,

Barbara Albinini

Chair - GSPCGP
